FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KELLY BRESLIN: SEA WITCH
October 20 – November 25, 2006
Opening reception for the artist: Friday, October 20, 5:00 – 8:00pm
Skestos Gabriele Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its first solo exhibition by Chicago-based artist Kelly Breslin on Friday, October 20, 2006. This exhibition includes new ink drawings, color photography, collages and sculpture.
Breslin is an artist who resists limiting herself to a singular discipline. Her diverse interests in sculpture, fashion, photography and silkscreen printing, to name a few, are evidenced in her unique approaches to artmaking. The artist finds inspiration from a variety of sources, including popular movies and music, as well as from comparative literature and critical theory. In much of Breslin’s work, desire and beauty are common themes that motivate and challenge her to create objects and works on paper that can be read on various levels.
In this exhibition, Breslin examines ideas related to romance, nostalgia, and joy. Nature and the landscape are also important elements in the work. Inspired by recent trips to the west coast and the Caribbean, images relating to the beach and the ocean are prevalent throughout the exhibition. Color, light, and perception are other distinctive components in this body of work. As in much of her art, common forms, such as a pile of logs or a photograph of the ocean, take on multi-layered, allegorical meanings for the artist. The materials that Breslin uses in her work are almost always found objects or images, such as fallen tree limbs, published texts, or pictures taken from books. Her careful selection process involves recognizing a deeper potential meaning for the materials. Through her creative process of fragmenting, accentuating or recontextualizing the elements, she transforms the ordinary into something completely new.
Breslin was born in Detroit in 1976 and studied art at the School of the Art Institute and at Northwestern University. Her work was included in the summer group show, PAPER: First anniversary group exhibition at Skestos Gabriele Gallery.
