FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pae White: Midnight

April 28 – June 3, 2006

Opening reception for the artist, Friday, April 28, 5:30 – 7:30pm

Skestos Gabriele Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition, Pae White: Midnight, the artist's first solo exhibition in Chicago. The exhibition includes new work executed in a variety of media, including a machine-cut birch bed frame, digitally woven tapestries, wire sculptures, books, silkscreen paper collages, activated motors, and vinyl graphic designs adhered to the gallery windows.

The art of Pae White cannot be easily defined by traditional art classifications. Always present in her work is the slippage between graphic design and high art practice, as well as the juxtaposition between the practicality and the preciousness of the object. Never limiting herself to a specific medium, White works with a wide range of materials, such as electrical wire, fabric, cardboard, wood, paper, and glass, to name a few. Every creative practice is fair game. In the past, she has created books, advertisements, sculpture, installations, paintings, works on paper, and furniture. Throughout her diverse body of work, there is always a meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship, as well as a primary concern for how the art will be experienced by the viewer.

In Midnight the artist transforms common objects and materials into art forms that are whimsical, yet lyrical. In this exhibition, White addresses varying states of consciousness as experienced during sleepless nights, when the mind wanders and images and sensations from previous occurrences coalesce. Digitally scanned collages are translated into woven tapestries, wire cages and electro-luminescent wire become storm clouds, and hand-painted toy motors turn into performers in a traveling circus.

Pae White studied art at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Her work has been exhibited throughout the world, including Turin, Paris, Cologne, Athens, Toronto, Shanghai, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. She lives and works in Los Angeles.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 11:00am – 6:00pm, Saturday 12:00 – 5:00pm.
